' FRESH WATER SUPPLY PROBLEM IN MALAYSIA'

Fresh water problem in Malaysia had becomes a very hot topic nowadays. Truthfully not only Malaysia but the whole world is facing with this problem. Looking into Malaysia perspectives, in the first place our country has a massive supply of fresh water. But by years the amount of the fresh water safe to be use  decreases by the cause of several alarming factors which in the end affects the water supply in Malaysia especially in big cities and also surprisingly east coast areas as well.

Before I carry on further I would like to stress that I will discuss this problems in a more environmental and sociological aspects and I would not touch on the sensitive issues of water supply management problems or any political issues. Let us looks back at why this problems happens in the first place. WWF Malaysia had issued out that freshwater in Malaysia is facing threats. The demand for water rises because of several factors. Some of it are urbanization, economic development, pollution, illegal logging in the upstream areas, improved living standard, rapid population growth, and also the most important criteria that everybody should be aware of is the increasing demand per capita.

Demand for water supply is greater at the big cities areas due to the fact that there are more human population there. Human use water for domestic usage as well being used by industries in order to carry on their operation. For example, food industries, beverage industries, agriculture as well as medicine. In rural areas water supply is plenty but the problems lies within the technology that are use to manage the water supply. More advance technology needs to be use in order to manage the water.

In Malaysia there are increasingly high rates of water wastage especially for domestic, industrial and agricultural use. This rate is unsustainable in the long term which is very irony since water is the renewable resources in the first place. The climate and the weather is constantly changing and thus affects the water resources. Destruction of water catchments areas also contributing to this problems making the fresh water supply is no longer suitable to be use.

To help maintain the freshwater ecosystem in Malaysia, WWF Malaysia has stated several important measurements. The measurements are advocates for integrated policies and approaches, field projects, improving info database and also information dissemination to increase awareness.

Awareness  and exposure on the problem is essential so that the Malaysian community would be more aware towards this issues. One small step may brings big changes in hope that all Malaysian will love and help preserve their freshwater supply better.
